New trends in pronunciation teaching

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to focus on the subject of pronunciation teaching and present new trends that have been introduced to the domain of phonetic pedagogy in the past two decades. For this reason, this paper starts with a section devoted to an overview of the history of pronunciation teaching and the different methods and approaches that have been used from the end of the nineteenth century until today. Furthermore, traditional techniques used for pronunciation practice will be described and the focus will shift to recent goals in pronunciation training, such as intelligibility and comprehensibility. Finally, latest tendencies in pronunciation instruction will be discussed and special heed will be paid to the multisensory approach, the ever growing importance of technology in the field and the interdisciplinary influences.

El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar la enseñanza de la pronunciación y presentar nuevas tendencias de la pedagogía de fonética introducidas en este campo durante las dos últimas décadas. Por esta razón, este trabajo comienza con una revisión histórica de la enseñanza de la pronunciación y los diferentes métodos y estrategias utilizados desde finales del siglo diecinueve hasta nuestros días. Posteriormente, se describen las técnicas tradicionalmente empleadas para la práctica de la pronunciación y el enfoque se desplazará hacía los nuevos objetivos en el campo de pronunciación como la inteligibilidad y comprensibilidad. Finalmente, se tratan las recientes tendencias en la instrucción de la pronunciación con un enfoque especial dedicado a la estrategia multisensorial, los avances de nuevas tecnologías en el área y las influencias interdisciplinares.
