Translation in L2/Foreign Language Teaching: An Aid or A hindrance?

Abstract

[ES] Este proyecto explora el uso de L1 (lengua materna) con estudiantes de una L2 (lengua extranjera). Se analizan el trasfondo histórico, y la investigación y praxis contemporánea para evaluar si el uso de la traducción supone realmente una ayuda o un impedimento. Se hace notar que el debate sobre esta pregunta no se ha dado por concluido, si bien se observa que la literatura explorada está a favor un juicioso uso de la L1, sobre todo con los estudiantes con niveles de dominio A1-B1. Asimismo, la tesis explora con detalle los estudios contemporáneos sobre el uso de la traducción en los niveles B2 –C2. Finalmente, se explica cómo aplicar el resultado de esta investigación en la enseñanza diaria del inglés como lengua extranjera, aplicación que debe fundamentarse en el uso juicioso de la L1 por parte de los estudiantes en sus clases de inglés, así como en la formación apropiada de profesor.

[EN] This project explores the use of L2/FL students´ L1/MT from a historical background and contemporary research and praxis within the L2/FL world of ELT in order to evaluate if the use of translation in L2/FL teaching is an aid or a hindrance. While noting that the debate on this question has not yet been conclusively settled, the author observes that the evidence explored in favour of a judicious L1/MT use, overwhelmingly favours its use within the A1-B1 student range. The author also explores contemporary research-led situations for the use of translation in the B2 – C2 language range. Finally, the author demonstrates how he would apply the results of his research in his everyday English L2/FL teaching, basing such use on the twin requirements of student agreement to any judicious use of their L1/MT in their English language classroom and appropriate teacher training.
