INTRODUCING GENDER STEREOTYPES IN THE EFL CLASSROOM

Abstract

[ES] El abordaje de este número especial en el aula de idiomas es fácil. Idiomas existen para la comunicación entre las personas, para expresar ideas, sentimientos, emociones, eventos o pensamientos. Como, que se aprenden mejor mediante la práctica, nos dejaron usar cualquier tema que puede influir en la vida de nuestros estudiantes. Hay varios métodos para introducir el tema, cada maestro tiene sus favoritas, pero este estudio se propone el uso de películas en el aula ELT con el objetivo de enseñar y entretener al mismo tiempo. Viendo una película en particular en el aula puede descubrir los estudiantes la posibilidad de ser lo que quieren ser, sin importar lo que otros puedan pensar de ellos. Por esta razón, la selección debe ser cuidado considerado, teniendo en cuenta varios aspectos veremos más adelante, la proyección de películas que no estén establecidos por los estereotipos, sino por personajes fuertes que luchan con fuerza hasta que alcancen sus metas. Las películas seleccionadas para este estudio son los poetas muertos, Million Dollar Baby, Blancanieves y la leyenda del cazador y Whale Rider, donde cada personaje principal nos muestra que vale la pena luchar por nuestros sueños e ideales hasta el final, no para conseguir la gloria, fama o dinero, pero para llegar a sus esperanzas y deseos.

[EN] Dealing with this special issue in the languages classroom is easy. Languages exist to communicate between individuals, to express ideas, feelings, emotions, events or thoughts. As, they are best learnt by practicing, let us use any theme that can influence our students’ lives. There are several methods to introduce the topic, each teacher has his or her favourite ones, but this study will propose using films in the ELT classroom with the aim of teaching and entertaining at the same time. Watching a particular film in the classroom can discover the students the possibility to be whatever they want to be, no matter what others may think about them. For this reason, the selection must be careful considered, bearing in mind several aspects we will see later, showing films that are not set by stereotypes, but by strong characters that fight hard until they reach their goals. The movies selected for this study are Dead Poets Society, Million Dollar Baby, Snow White and the Huntsman and Whale Rider, where each main character shows us that it is worth fighting for our dreams and ideals until the end, not to get the glory, fame or money, but to reach their hopes and desires.
