TEACHING LITERATURE AT SCHOOLS THROUGH LORD OF THE FLIES

Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo es introducir y enseñar literatura o textos literarios en clase de inglés en Bachillerato con el fin de enseñar a los alumnos una nueva manera de aprender inglés. A través de la lectura de un texto literario los alumnos son capaces de reconocer la expresión gramatical, aprender nuevo vocabulario y desarrollar habilidades comunicativas tales como leer, hablar y escuchar, gracias a los debates con sus compañeros. Para acercarnos a este objetivo los estudiantes trabajarán con la novela El Señor de las Moscas escrita por William Golding como texto literario. La novela abarca muchos temas que motivadores para lectores adolescentes, como la violencia, la injusticia, relaciones con los compañeros y el bien y el mal del ser humanos. Además el libro no tiene una composición difícil por lo que no es muy complicado de entender, aunque podemos encontrar simbolismo como una figura literaria en él.

The aim of this work is to introduce and teach Literature or literary texts into an ESL Classroom in Non Compulsory Secondary Education in order to teach students a new way to learn English. Through the reading of a literary text students are able to recognize grammatical expression, learn new vocabulary and develop communicative skills such as reading, speaking and listening due to discussions with their peers. To approach this aim students are going to work with the novel Lord of the Flies written by William Golding as a literary text. The novel embraces many topics that are a motivation for young adult readers such as violence, injustice, relationship with peers and the good and evil of human being. Moreover the book has not a difficult composition so it is not so complicated to understand for students, although we can find symbolism as a literary figure in it.
