LITERATURE IN THE ENGLISH CLASSROOM: READING AND WATCHING THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Abstract

The main points discussed in this work are the use of literature as a source of material for EFL classroom in the Secondary education context, and the application of the cinema adaptations of literary works in the EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classroom. More specifically, this paper examines the use of the trilogy The Lord of the Rings written by J.R.R. Tolkien. The first part will be devoted to analyse the employment of literature from a general point of view in the EFL class. The second part is concerned to the chosen literary work and different aspects will be taken into account: the historical context, the author’s biography, his works and the different interpretations, the film adaptation and their/its exploitation in class

Los puntos más importantes considerados en este trabajo son el uso de la literatura como fuente de material para la clase de Inglés como segunda lengua en el contexto de la educación secundaria, y el uso de la adaptaciones cinematográficas de los trabajos literarios en el aula. Más concretamente, este trabajo examina el uso de la trilogía de El señor de los anillos escrita por J.R.R. Tolkien. La primera parte del trabajo se dedicará a analizar el uso de la literatura en el aula de manera general. Además consideraremos el uso del video y su combinación con los trabajos literarios; La segunda parte está relacionada con el trabajo literario elegido y se tomarán en consideración diferentes aspectos: el contexto histórico, la biografía del autor, sus trabajos y sus interpretaciones, la adaptación cinematográfica y su aplicación en el aula.
