Analysing the abilities of the students from an Escuela Oficial de Idiomas to self-assess their strengths and weaknesses in English language learning and their degree of learning autonomy

Abstract

[ES] Este Trabajo Fin de Máster tiene dos objetivos principales. En primer lugar, y tomando como referencia dos grupos de alumnos de la Escuela Oficial de Idiomas de Burgos, trata de establecer si la autoevaluación de sus puntos fuertes y débiles en inglés es precisa. De igual modo, examinará si dicha información coincide con las notas que obtienen en los exámenes finales. Asimismo, se especulará sobre si podrían haber empleado dicha información para mejorar aquellas destrezas lingüísticas que se les dan peor. El segundo objetivo principal de este Trabajo es determinar hasta qué punto estos alumnos perciben que son más autónomos en su proceso de aprendizaje mediante el uso del wiki del curso. De igual forma, se les animará a que reflexionen sobre distintos modos de aumentar su autonomía, tras analizar hasta qué punto el empleo del wiki del curso les ha animado a buscar recursos adicionales en la red.

[EN] This Master's Dissertation has two main goals. First of all, taking as reference two groups from the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas of Burgos (Spain), it tries to ascertain whether they can accurately self-assess their strengths and weaknesses in English. Apart from this, it will examine whether this information coincides with the marks they attained in their final exams. As well as this, it will speculate whether these students might have used the information about their weakest skills in English in arder to improve them. The second main goal is to establish to what extent these students perceive they have become more autonomous learners through the use of the course wiki. Moreover, they will be encouraged to reflect on different ways to become even more autonomous, after analysing to what extent using the course wiki sparked them to search for further online resources.
