Race relations in America: A comparative analysis of Harper Lee's 'To Kili a Mockingbird' (1960) and 'Go Seta Watchman' (2015)

Abstract

[ES] En muchas ocasiones, la literatura estadounidense se centra en explorar el pasado del país, así como las preocupaciones sociales comunes entre sus habitantes. Una de las más frecuentes, la del racismo, suele ser retratada en muchas obras de ficción. En 1960, Harper Lee publicó Matar a un ruiseñor, una novela que ganó gran fama por su descripción de las relaciones raciales en América. Después de haber recibido críticas positivas por sus personajes y su descripción de un pequeño pueblo segregacionista del sur de los Estados Unidos, la segunda novela de Lee, Ve y pon un centinela, no recibió los mismos elogios. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de esta tesis es analizar y contrastar las dos novelas escritas por Harper Lee. Para ello, el trabajo se enfocará en cómo se abordan los temas del racismo y la discriminación racial en la sociedad estadounidense, específicamente durante los años 30 y SO. Debido a la importancia que algunos eventos históricos tienen en la trama de ambas novelas, el contexto histórico del país se detallará antes de proceder a estudiar los textos literarios elegidos.

[EN] In many instances, the aim of American literature is to explore the past of the country, as well as common social concerns of its people. One of the most prominent ones, that of racism, is often portrayed in many works of fiction. In 1960, Harper Lee published To Kili a Mockingbird, a novel that became noteworthy for its description of racial relations in America. Having once received widespread acclaim for her characters and depiction of a Southern segregationist town, Lee's second published novel, Go Set a Watchman, did not receive the same positive reception as the first one. Thus, the objective of this dissertation is to analyze and contrast the two novels written by Harper Lee, whilst focusing on how racism and discrimination were addressed in American society during the 30s and the SOs. Due to the importance that sorne historie events have in the plot, the historical context will be detailed prior to the study of the chosen novels.
